The idea is to write 150-200 words a day for each prompt and to post it on this blog. At the end of the month, I’ll post the list of prompts if anyone is interested.
Prompt 25: White carpet.
Neil was never good at parties, but it was his brother’s thirtieth birthday, and his wife had insisted that he be there. He stood by the window, listening to Nancy’s speech.
“And remember, she said. “don’t you dare mess anything on the white carpet.” She paused. “I will kill you.”
Everyone laughed and dispersed. Neil knew she wasn’t kidding. As everyone came in earlier, she made them take off their shoes. He noticed a small woman standing near the fireplace, completely frozen. Her wide eyes caught his. She motioned for him to come closer.
“Cold?” he asked.
Wordlessly, she moved her leg to reveal a large burgundy stain on the carpet. “In a way,” she said.
Neil stood next to her to help hide the stain. He knew Nancy would transform into her inner dragon at the sight of it.
“What should I do?” she asked.
“Don’t move,” Neil said. “Don’t draw attention to yourself.” He tried to think of an escape plan. They smiled at Nancy as she came past. With her back to them, Neil grabbed the woman’s hand and quickly ran for the door.
They ran faster as they heard Nancy’s shrill scream.
